A UK spouse or partner visa application is only as strong as the evidence behind it. Most refusals we see are not about whether a relationship is genuine, but about documents that are missing, out of date or in the wrong format. Preparing early makes the whole process calmer and quicker.

1. Evidence of your relationship

You will need to show that your relationship is genuine and subsisting. Depending on your circumstances, this may include:

2. Meeting the financial requirement

The financial requirement is often the most technical part of the application. The type of evidence needed depends on how the requirement is being met — for example through employment, self-employment, savings or a combination of sources. Payslips, bank statements and employer letters usually need to cover specific periods and match each other exactly.

Tip: check that the figures on your payslips match the deposits on your bank statements. Small inconsistencies are one of the most common reasons for extra questions from the Home Office.

3. Accommodation and English language

You must show that there will be adequate accommodation for you and any dependants, without overcrowding. A tenancy agreement or property documents, plus a letter from the landlord or homeowner where relevant, are usually needed. Most applicants also need to meet the English language requirement with an approved test or qualification.
